Competitive Teams

October 17, 2021 – Please see the notice here about vaccination status for tryouts: https://fernievolleyball.com/2022-competitive-teams-update-vaccination-guidelines/

The Fernie Volleyball Club participates as part of Volleyball Alberta’s Indoor Club program.

The goal is to have teams participate in all bigger sanctioned events called “Premiers” as well as Provincial Championships and in some cases even Volleyball Canada ‘Nationals’.

The specific makeup of teams across divisions (Girls vs Boys, 13U to 18U) will be determined by coaches based on the number of athletes during tryouts. The club may not have teams in all divisions depending on the breakdown of athletes.

The last time we had competitive teams formed/competing (pre-pandemic) was for the early part of the 2020 Club Season.  We had interest enough to form teams as identified below. This general information can serve as a guide to what families/athletes can expect in terms of time commitments for participation in an FVC club team in the 2022 season.

General Information – Competitive Teams

    • Season runs from early January through end of April (possibly into May if teams choose to participate in Nationals). Registration (and tryouts if numbers deem it) happen in early December.
    • Teams practice twice per week for 90 to 120 minutes with most practices occurring at the Fernie Community Centre. (Secondary sites are Max Turyk Community Centre and Fernie Secondary)
    • 13U ‘Travel’ team(s) participate in 2 ‘Premier’ tournaments as well as Provincials.  All tournament fees for these events are covered as part of the overall fee. Ancillary costs related to athletes or families travelling to the events are not covered. (Travel, lodging and food)
    • 14U, 15U, 16U, 17U and 18U teams participate in 3 ‘Premier’ tournaments as well as provincials. Same information as above about tournament fees covered but not ancillary fees related to travel.
    • The Premier and Provincials events are typically in Calgary or Edmonton.
    • Volleyball Canada Nationals are optional per team (starting at 14U level) and participation is decided by the individual team based on location, expenses, etc. The last time Nationals were run was in 2019 and three FVC teams participated in Nationals.

The age ranges, planned practice days/times and dates for the tournaments in the information below have been updated for the 2022 season to allow families to consider & plan accordingly.
