  • Proof of Volleyball Alberta/Canada registration as a 2026 Youth Development Player – Tryout will need to be emailed to club@fernievolleyball.com NO LATER THAN AUG 31ST FOR SEPTEMBER TRYOUTS AND NO LATER THAN NOV 21ST FOR LATER TRYOUTS. (see below for details).
  • A tryout fee is assessed to all participants to cover tryout costs. The fee covers all sessions for any given age/gender group.

TEAM SELECTION / COMPOSITION

The FVC coaching staff will select a maximum of 12 athletes to form any of the competitive teams. In gender/age categories where there is strong interest and a larger number of athletes participating in tryouts, not all athletes will be offered a position on the team. The coaching staff is not bound to select the maximum 12 athletes if it’s deemed that a significant skill gap (or commitment gap) exists that could be detrimental to overall team development.

In determining team selection, the FVC coaching staff will assess:

  • Core Volleyball skills and abilities
  • Overall athletic ability
  • Effort/focus during tryouts
  • Overall demeanour, perceived coachability and team fit

If the number of athletes trying out in any category is significant (e.g. 22+) and practice facilities and coaching is available the FVC will consider forming two teams (organized by ability and ranking from tryouts) in the same category.

Reminder about Volleyball Canada 16-month windows for age groups.  Athletes born in Sept-Dec can tryout out at either age categories.  If players would like to tryout for both age categories, complete the Expression of Interest twice so that you are expected for both tryouts.

If you have questions about the Tryout process or FVC competitive teams/season, please feel free to email us at club@fernievolleyball.com

Practice days/times for various teams (starting early January 2026) are still being worked out and will be updated along with key Volleyball Alberta tournament dates & locations here: https://fernievolleyball.com/competitive-indoor-teams/

We will share details about season fees in the coming weeks. You can refer to 2025 season fees (for reference only – these will change) and if it’s your first year considering participating in Club Volleyball, consider checking out our Considering Costs information.

Again if your player isn’t showing on the 2026 TRYOUT LIST that indicates you haven’t yet completed the Expression of Interest form online, please do so ASAP at the following link: https://forms.gle/oaoVSbxZkAPbAQqF9

2025 Competitive Teams – Fees Information

2025 Fees for Fernie Volleyball Club Teams

  • 13U Girls (Travel): $650 to FVC + $123.55 direct to VA/VC
  • 14U Girls (Travel): $825 to FVC + $123.55 direct to VA/VC
  • 15U Girls (Travel): $870 to FVC + $123.55 direct to VA/VC
  • 16U Girls (Travel): $915 to FVC + $123.55 direct to VA/VC
  • 17U Girls (Travel): $915 to FVC + $123.55 direct to VA/VC
  • 18U Girls (Travel): $990 to FVC + $123.55 direct to VA/VC
  • 14U Boys (Travel): $775 to FVC + $123.55 direct to VA/VC
  • 15U Boys (Travel): $870 to FVC + $123.55 direct to VA/VC

Volleyball Alberta (VA) and Volleyball Canada (VC) collect fees for competitive players beyond the fees the club charges.  That amount totals $123.55 and comes in 2 parts – $21.81 of it as part of the tryout fee and the balance ($101.74) after a player is offered a roster spot on a competitive team and accepts.  At that point the family will need to purchase the ‘Competitive’ membership and will pay that $101.74 difference directly in SportLomo. If your player is on the Tryout List and you haven’t yet purchased the $21.81 tryout membership in SportLomo (and completed the other tryout requirements), please follow the instructions here ASAP: https://fernievolleyball.com/2025-competitive-teams-tryout-details/

FVC Fees will fluctuate on a year-to-year basis but for 2025 the budgeted FVC base fees for the Travel teams range between $860 and $1215 per player which is a small increase from last year due to increases in tournament registration costs, increases in facilities rental costs and a modest increase in coach expenses costs during tournaments .  The club is excited to have run successful camp and recreational programs and done enough fundraising to be in a position to offer a very large subsidy (approx $225 per player) this year again to significantly lower these base fees to the levels posted at the top. This level of subsidy is not guaranteed to be consistent/available every year but the FVC works hard to try and make the club as accessible as possible by keeping fees as low as possible.

The FVC portion of fees includes the tournament fees and coaching costs for ALL Volleyball Alberta Premier tournaments and Provincial championships. If teams decide (as a team) to participate in additional events (Volleyball Canada Nationals, US events, additional tournaments, etc) the event & coaching costs will be separate and shared across participating players on those teams. (Teams are welcome to fundraise as a team to help offset additional tournament costs)

Families should also budget the cost of travel, accommodation and food for Premier and Provincial championship events during the season. Some players/parents stay with friends/family in Calgary, Red Deer & Edmonton and many stay in a team organized hotel. Typically games start quite early on Saturday so travelling later on Friday and staying 2 nights is common.  Additional tournaments such as Nationals or the larger US events are often 3 days of competition requiring a longer stay.

Yearly FVC fees are determined by a rigorous budgeting exercise taking into consideration a number of factors including:
– Anticipated number of teams and anticipated number of players per team
– Number and location of tournaments
– Coaching costs (Travel Expenses and Honorarium)
– Uniform & Equipment requirements
– Facilities requirements
– General overhead for operating the club (Website, Volleyball Alberta Registrations, Insurance, Accounting/Legal, etc)

If costs are a barrier to participation in the club, we encourage families to pursue support programs such as:
– Emily Brydon Youth Foundation: https://wp.emilybrydonyouthfoundation.com/
– Canadian Tire Jumpstart: http://jumpstart.canadiantire.ca/en.html
– Kidsport Canada: http://www.kidsportcanada.ca/british-columbia/
– Athletics 4 Kids: http://www.a4k.ca/

We have had a number of FVC athletes supported via these programs in past years.

New FVC President

Long-time FVC board member Sandra Kulczycki will take on responsibilities as President replacing Dennis Staples.

Dennis will be back as a head coach for the 2025 season and continues as club Administrator to help with the day-to-day operations so you should still expect to hear from him on a regular basis! Big thanks for his leadership as FVC President these past 6.5 years as the club grew significantly over that time.

*GREAT NEWS* –  2023 FEES HAVE NOT INCREASED FROM 2022 DESPITE REASONABLY SIGNIFICANT INCREASES IN BASE COSTS TO VOLLEYBALL ALBERTA MEMBERSHIPS AND TOURNAMENT FEES.

Volleyball Alberta (VA) and Volleyball Canada (VC) collect fees for competitive players beyond the fees the club charges. FVC is able to collect and pay a portion of these fees on behalf of all players that participate on a competitive team. There is also a portion that has to be paid directly by the athlete/family ahead of tryouts. This fee to be settled ahead of tryouts is considered a ‘2023 Youth Development Player – Tryout’ fee and totals $21.81 ($14 to Volleyball Alberta and $5 to Volleyball Canada + taxes/fees). See below for information about registering for the Youth Development Player – Tryout membership. This fee must be paid and you must send proof of this to the club ahead of tryouts.

For athletes that are offered a spot on an FVC Travel team and accept, the club will be upgrading the VA/VC membership for each athlete on a team roster from ‘Development’ to ‘Youth Indoor Competitive Player’. This upgrade amount is another ~$95 and is collected as part of the overall FVC fees collected. (The overall values at the top of the page for different age categories include these amounts)

Fees will fluctuate on a year-to-year basis but for 2023 the budgeted FVC base fees for the Travel teams range between $832 and $1132 per player.  The club is excited to have run successful camp and recreational programs and done enough fundraising to be in a position to offer a very large subsidy (average of more than $300 per player) this year again to significantly lower these base fees to the levels posted at the top. This level of base fee and subsidy is not guaranteed to be consistent/available every year but the FVC works hard to try and make the club as accessible as possible by keeping fees as low as possible.

The FVC portion of fees includes the tournament fees and coaching costs for ALL Volleyball Alberta Premier tournaments and Provincial championships. If teams decide (as a team) to participate in additional events (Volleyball Canada Nationals, US events, etc) the event & coaching costs will be separate and shared across participating players on those teams. (Teams are welcome to fundraise as a team to help offset additional tournament costs)

Families should also budget the cost of travel, accommodation and food for Premier and Provincial championship events during the season. Some players/parents stay with friends/family in Calgary & Edmonton and many stay in a team organized hotel. Typically games start quite early on Saturday so travelling later on Friday and staying 2 nights in Calgary/Edmonton is common.  Additional tournaments such as Nationals or the larger US events are often 3 days of competition requiring a longer stay.

Yearly FVC fees are determined by a rigorous budgeting exercise taking into consideration a number of factors including:
– Anticipated number of teams and anticipated number of players per team
– Number and location of tournaments
– Coaching costs (Travel Expenses and Honorarium)
– Uniform & Equipment requirements
– Facilities requirements
– General overhead for operating the club (Website, Volleyball Alberta Registrations, Accounting/Legal, etc)

If costs are a barrier to participation in the club, we encourage families to pursue support programs such as:
– Emily Brydon Youth Foundation: https://wp.emilybrydonyouthfoundation.com/
– Canadian Tire Jumpstart: http://jumpstart.canadiantire.ca/en.html
– Kidsport Canada: http://www.kidsportcanada.ca/british-columbia/
– Athletics 4 Kids: http://www.a4k.ca/

We have had a number of FVC athletes supported via these programs in past years.

22+) and practice facilities and coaching is available the FVC will consider forming two teams (generally organized by ability) in the same category.  If there are players that aren’t offered roster positions with teams and enough are interested (across gender & age categories) the club may offer some developmental play opportunities if we have facilities and coaches available.  This development program (if offered) would be promoted in January for a late January start.

If you have questions about the Tryout process or FVC competitive teams/season, please feel free to email us at club@fernievolleyball.com

Practice days/times for various teams (starting early January 2023) are not yet established but will be updated soon on the FVC website.  To review 2023 tournament dates/locations for various groups, please visit: https://fernievolleyball.com/programs/

We can’t wait to get the season started!

2022 Competitive Teams Update & Vaccination Guidelines

For those families with players hoping to play/travel as part of FVC competitive teams starting in January 2022, here’s a bit of an update.

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST

If you haven’t yet done so, please complete the Expression of Interest form ASAP.

If you are new to competitive club volleyball, reminder that general information and tournament dates (locations coming soon) can be reviewed here: https://fernievolleyball.com/programs/

As of Oct 17th, 2021 here’s where we are with players expressing interest (not all at a ‘Committed’ level).  Some players are age eligible for two categories (if they are born in Sep, Oct, Nov or Dec) but so far have been grouped in the defacto age category for their birth year.

  • 13U Girls = 15
  • 13U Boys = 4
  • 14U Girls = 11
  • 15U Girls = 14
  • 16U Girls = 12
  • 16U Boys = 2
  • 17/18 Boys = 1
  • 17/18U Girls = 10
Tryouts will be run in very early December for all age categories where there is interest enough to form one or more teams.  Tryout details and fees will be posted in November.

VACCINATION STATUS

Volleyball Alberta recently posted this information about the mandatory proof of vaccination currently required by all facilities they rely on to run the large “Premier” (and provincials) tournaments.  https://www.volleyballalberta.ca/node/956

Volleyball Canada has also indicated that for any of their Nationals competitions they must follow the provincial, regional and facility requirements. And here again if events like the large ‘Super Nationals’ (15U-18U) were to be run with current requirements in place, only fully vaccinated participants could access the facility & play.

The Fernie Volleyball Club continues not to have an independent vaccine mandate for the local programs we offer and this isn’t changing at this time.  The club does take seriously the global pandemic and have always been proactive with our Covid-19 safety plan including voluntary mask requirements (even for on-court activities) in late 2020 and early 2021 as well as other best practice measures to do our best to ensure the safety of all participants.

The primary purpose of our competitive team programs is to train for these large competitions (Alberta Premiers, Provincials, VC Nationals).  Therefore the FVC (for these programs only) plans to collect proof of vaccination for all athletes wishing to attend tryouts and compete for a spot on one of our teams. We will also collect proof of vaccination for all coaches and parent supporters (Team Managers, etc) who plan to attend competitions with the team.  A large portion of the fees we collect for the club season go towards paying for participation in these events and we are not willing to risk the entire team not being allowed to compete (with no refunds offered) if unvaccinated members of the team are denied access to competition facilities.

If organizations such as Volleyball Alberta and Volleyball Canada update their directives based on loosening requirements from the large facilities they rely on for these tournaments, the FVC plans to follow suit.

Please feel free to share this information with other families who may be interested in competitive club volleyball for their players.

Thanks,

FVC
